Need some advice on a 97' SC2!!! 9 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 0
So one of my teachers gave me a 97' SC2 manual. I love this car, but the engine has 164k miles on it. I want to supe it up and i don't know whether i should buy a new long block which i found for $1600 and then upgrade it with new cams, pistons, rings, the whole 9 yards or if i should just buy all the performance parts and rebuild the engine keeping using the old block? any advice or help would be much appreciated. Thanks

If you are going to overbore it and replace the pistons anyway, then what difference does it make if you use the old block? Unless it has some other damage, like from bad timing chain guides or something, the old block should be fine. Once you strip it, clean it, and rebuild it, it is good as new anyway.

And wait a minute, $1600.00 for a used 97 Saturn engine??? Uh, no thanks. You'd be lucky if the entire car is worth that. 13 years old with 164,000 miles??? That's probably only worth a few hundred bucks in the used car market. So for $1600, you ought to get about 2 complete vehicles.
