Greetings Saturn Enthusiasts! Please enjoy the latest October SPS Updates… New Products Finally, the boys in Cleveland have come through on exhausts! By the end of this week, Kayne cat-back exhaust piping will be in stock! All Kayne systems use 2.0 inch mandrel-bent piping and bullet-style resonators. And a unique flat-lip flange allows the system to be used on both SOHC and DOHC models. The top-of-the-line system is made of T304 aircraft-quality stainless steel. The 304 part numbers are KAY304SS for the 93-96 2-door coupes and KAY304SL for sedans, wagons, and 97-99 coupes. Pricing for the 304 stainless units is $349.00 each. The bargain-priced system uses OEM-quality 409 stainless steel and aluminized resonators. Their part number is KAY409SS for the 93-96 2 door coupes and KAY409SL for sedans, wagons, and 97-99 coupes. Pricing for the 409 stainless units is $299.00 each. We have tested a prototype 304 unit on our 98 SC2 and were very pleased with both performance and sound levels! We now offer true "bolt-in" performance fuel pressure regulators for all DOHC Saturns and most SOHC Saturns. By adding 30 kpa (kilopascals) of fuel pressure to the Saturn fuel injectors, our regulators extend the range of fuel compensation during closed-loop operation and add considerable amounts of additional fuel under open-loop operation. On most Saturns fitted with an array of basic bolt-on performance parts, one of our regulators is all that is needed to maintain a proper fuel ratio – and thus benefit fully from other modifications. Unlike some other "fuel-pressure riser" gimmicks, the SPS regulator is a true "bolt-in" direct replacement for the original 320 (1991-1997) or 350 (1998+) kpa regulators – no cutting, fabricating, or adjusting is required! Part number FPR35001 fits all 91-94 DOHC Saturns and is priced at $179.00 each. Part number FPR35002 fits all 95-97 Saturns and is priced at $159.00 each. And part number FPR38003 fits all 98-99 Saturns and is priced at $179.00 each. These are in stock now! GTS headlight covers are now available for most Saturns without the smoked tint. This adds an element of style and protection to the Saturn headlight areas without concerns of legality or nighttime vision. GTS288C is the correct unit for the 97-99 coupes. GTS875C fits all 91-95 sedans and wagons. And GTS877C fits all 96-99 sedans and wagons. These are in stock now at $49.95 per set. We are proud to now offer KYB struts for all Saturns. The KYB units are not designed for extremely high performance applications, but they are gas-charged and offer slightly higher compression damping in the front. (Rear damping rates are identical to stock.) We have found the KYB struts to work great with the "softer" springs such as Eibach, Intrax, and Sprint. And they are a bargain at only $89.95 each. Order the front units with part number KYB055 and the rear units with part number KYB056. Have you been looking for a low-priced and conservative performance brake pad upgrade? If so, our new Stillen Metal Matrix pads may be the answer. Stillen’s Metal Matrix brake pads use a more aggressive carbon-metallic compound that delivers better initial bite, more predictable modulation, and slightly higher temperature thresholds. Yet they are conservative enough to be kind to rotors, light on dust, and low on noise. These are great pads for the budget-minded enthusiast! MM503 is in stock now for all front brakes for only $49.00 per axle set. And MM508 is in stock now for all rear disc brakes for only $39.00 per axle set. Our unique new wheel lug bolts are made of hardened steel for greater strength and employ a "dog-ear" feature to prevent cross-threading of the lug nuts. These are a simple replacement for the original stock wheel bolts, yet they will greatly simplify the life of any serious competitor or enthusiast that removes wheels often. Each set of 4 sells for $19.89 under part number SPS2032. New SPS vinyl decals are now in stock that do not use the rainbow color scheme. A view of the newest design is available at the SPS web site. Check out part number SPSCD02 for $9.95 each. Many new products will be introduced very shortly. But although we are excited about the new items, we are trying very hard to use discretion about releasing new product information. As we’ve learned from previous projects, sharing any information before solidifying all of the facts can inadvertently mislead customers, employees, and supporters. Please visit our web site often and watch for future updates. Many more exciting items are on the horizon! SPS Racing If you were unable to make it to MidOhio for the 1998 Valvoline Runoffs on October 10, then you missed some very exciting racing! After winning the Southeast Divisional title, Mike Kramer and the rest of the Thundersport Racing team were a bit disappointed with their 24th place qualifying effort at the Runoffs. But mechanical problems and rainy weather limited the teams qualifying ability – and left us to work with a 24th spot as best as possible. "Real estate…" said Mike before the race. "I’ve got to make up a lot of real estate!" But working with limited resources to create something great is not a new idea to SPS. And it is certainly not a new idea to Mike Kramer! During the race, Mike drove like a demon. As a result of Mike’s exceptional driving – and a few well-placed accidents – Mike found himself in the 12th spot by lap 6 – right on the bumper of James Walker and scR motorsports! Mike managed to pass James before his tires finally went away and was literally pushed by James to a final finish in 11th spot! His amazing come-from-behind effort won a lot of recognition for Mike and the Thundersport Racing team. And it served as an exciting finish to fun and productive year! Most of you probably already know that the 1998 season was only the second year of racing for James Walker and the scR motorsports team. And it was only the first year of competition at the national level. Certainly, we surprised a lot of people by making it to the national championships at the Runoffs. And we even surprised ourselves a bit by qualifying 13th in a field of 40 cars. After 5 laps in the race, James had worked his way up to the 11th spot and was moving forward when accidents ahead and behind caused him to lose a position to SPS Racing team member Mike Kramer. For the next 6 laps, James literally pushed Mike through the turns, while Mike pulled James down the straight-aways. It was not until the next-to-last lap that a Neon finally pushed his way in between Mike and James, resulting in a 13th place finish for James and the scR motorports team. And while a 13th place finish is a few spots shy of our 10th place goal, James managed to turn a fastest lap time of 1:52.1 – his best ever at MidOhio. And in a race previously dominated by Neons, only 4 finished ahead of the scR Saturn. Said James following the race, "The SPS suspension package performed flawlessly and allowed us to compete head-to-head with the Neons that we had targeted. Unfortunately, we were all outdone by the radical set-ups used on the Mazdas and Nissans." Team scR will be working closely with SPS during the off-season to develop a new package for next year – a package that will be on par with those offered for the Mazdas and Nissans which dominated this year’s Runoffs championship. SPS Events The SPS team is planning to spend most of the winter developing new products and preparing for the 1999 spring season. So we don’t have much planned in the way of events.
