Greetings Saturn Enthusiasts! Please enjoy the latest May SPS Updates… SPS Mail Server Takes a Dive During the week of May 14-18, the SPS website was moved to a new server. Initial testing has indicated that speed and performance from the new location has been greatly improved. However, some problems with the mail server were discovered as a result of the transition. (Some incoming messages were never received, and some outgoing messages were never successfully sent.) So if you were expecting to receive an email message from SPS between Wednesday May 16 and Saturday May 19 and never received it, this could be the reason. Please contact us again! We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. Product News Our attractive white-faced gauge sets add style and sporty appeal to the Saturn interior. The bright white background works well with the bold black markings to create a highly visible gauge pod and considerably improve the fun-to-drive factor. Our kits include white face covers for the speedometer, tachometer, fuel level, coolant temperature, and some warning lights, in addition to a special tool for the removal of the stock gauge needles. Now they are finally available for the 2000+ DOHC ‘S’ cars. Part number NR3827 is in stock now for $139 per set. Repairing, maintaining, or modifying your own car can be a great learning experience and a way to save money. But lets face it: abusing your hands with cuts, bruises, and burns is downright unpleasant. Yet normal work gloves are too bulky to allow proper handling of tools and fasteners. That’s why Mechanix gloves are the choice of top racing teams and automotive professionals. Mechanix gloves make wrenching and tinkering safer and more comfortable by providing a unique combination of protection, dexterity, and style. These gloves are the original version. We stock black, blue, purple, red, and yellow in sizes ranging from small to extra-large. See part number MG01B for black, MG01L for blue, MG01P for purple, MG01R for red, and MG01Y for yellow. (Add a final digit to the part number to denote size: S=small, M=medium, L=large, XL=extra-large.) These are in stock now for just $24.99 per pair! Covercraft front end covers (bras) are now available for the 2001+ ’S’ series coupes. Covercraft custom front-end covers are known for their great fit and high-quality materials. This ensures convenient and long-lasting protection against stone chips, bugs, and debris. Features include easy (no tools needed) installation, custom tailoring for an exact fit, and the ability to open the hood with the bra in place. Covered by Covercraft’s 90-day warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Choose the MM43003 for all 2001+ ‘S’ series coupes (SC1 and SC2) for $99.00 each. Many more new products will be introduced very shortly. But although we are excited about the new items, we must use discretion about releasing new product information because sharing any information before solidifying all of the facts can inadvertently mislead customers, employees, and supporters. Please visit our web site often and watch for future updates. Many more exciting items are on the horizon! May Specials Improving exhaust flow out of any motor will improve breathing efficiency and deliver increased power. Our Saturn-specific exhaust components deliver upon this promise and create a deep, aggressive tone in the process. And since Pacesetter exhausts are on backorder from Pacesetter until Mid-June, we decided to put our aluminized short-wheelbase systems on special for May. Just order the EX003AZ, EXMAZ01, and EXMST01 for any 93-96 Saturn coupe (SC1 or SC2.) This combination would normally cost $407.00 – but is on sale now for only $366.30! Save 10%! SPS Racing The scR motorsports team has been forced to make a schedule change as a result of last-minute tweaks being made to the #34 car and unfinished preparation to the #21 car. The May 27 race at Grattan has been removed from the schedule. However, a September 14-16 race at Watkins Glen has been added to the schedule. (James, hurry up. I’m getting ANXIOUS!) In other news, the scR website, located at http://www.teamscr.com, has been moved to a new server and is now functioning properly. Be sure to visit in order to see the latest schedule, results, and racecar specs. Fans of Saturn Performance can be proud of more than one Saturn victory this month. First, ThunderSport Racing’s crew chief, Tom Brandlehner, co-piloted a modified Saturn SC1 Coupe to a first place finish in the Economy class (22nd overall) in the One Lap of America race – the modern day version of the Cannonball Run. Brandlehner and his co-driver, Chris Berube, drove the turbocharged Saturn entry with distinction during the 4000-lap, uniquely American competition. The team raised both eyebrows and the excitement quotient during the eight-day Saturn Engineering "field trip." Then one day later, at Gateway International Raceway, Mike Kramer guided his #19 ThunderSport Racing Saturn to its fourth straight SCCA National victory. Kramer’s Texaco Havoline and SPS sponsored SC2 blasted around the Gateway oval and road course, clocking a quick lap at just under 80 miles per hour. And he qualified his Saturn on the SSC pole for the fourth time in as many races. Nevertheless, the weekend proved to be very challenging, as Mid-West Division fast guys - John Saucier in his Mazda Protégé and Dodge Neon pilots John Buck and Gene Harrington - chased Kramer. When Sunday’s green flag fell on the field of American Sedans, T1, T2, SSB and SSC cars, John Buck vaulted to a slim lead in SSC with Kramer and Saucier close behind. On the second lap, Dennis Aubuchon’s T2 Camaro snapped sideways during the transition from the oval to the infield road course, causing Buck and Saucier to falter significantly. Kramer took advantage of the bobble, moved to the outside of the entanglement, went deep into the very fast turn #1 and never looked back. "This is a tough place to race. I was lucky to have some of my family here substituting for the Brandlehner brothers this weekend. My dad helped me massage out some of the twisted wreckage from Road Atlanta. Then he worked the radio, giving me lap times and intervals. My eight-year-old son, Alex, also worked a watch under my Mom’s guidance. They kept telling me to stay consistent and smooth," said Kramer. "I was fortunate to pull out to a good lead," explains Kramer. "The mirror was full of Buck, Saucier and Harrington dicing back and forth. But if I could keep it all together and not make any mistakes, they weren’t going to catch me." On the fourth lap, Kramer enjoyed the drafting help provided by 2000 SSB National Champion Randy Saucier along with Kevin Grant, both in Miatas. "We were running much faster in the draft than the other SSC cars. They got to racing each other real hard and I got away," said Kramer. He motored under the checkered some 10.5 seconds in front of second place SSC finisher John Saucier. The #19 Texaco Havoline Saturn is almost identical to production vehicles delivered from Saturn Retailers every day. SCCA requires a racing seat, safety harness, roll-cage, and fire extinguisher. The car is shod with Kumho V700 racing radials mounted to stock Saturn alloy wheels. The Saturn DOHC engine, transmission, and radiator are filled exclusively with Texaco Havoline fluids and lubricants - including Havoline Formula 3 synthetic motor oil, Havoline Automatic Transmission Fluid, and Havoline Extended Life Anti-Freeze (the only anti-freeze recommended by General Motors for all of GM vehicles.) And, of course, suspension, brakes, and air cleaner are from SPS.
