Greetings Saturn Enthusiasts!

Please enjoy the latest May SPS Updates…

SPS and Saturn Corp. to Attend Carlisle
The annual Custom Compact Power Jam at Carlisle, PA fairgrounds is one of the largest and hottest compact car events on the entire East Coast. And it just got hotter - since SPS and Saturn Corporation have made plans to attend this year’s event on May 14-16.

On display will be one of the 1999 SC2 RAD Performance Concept Cars from Saturn Corp., the pearl-white 98 SC2 SPS project car, vehicles from local Saturn retailers, and other modified Saturns.

Kevin Svarda of SPS and team members from Saturn and the local Saturn Retailer will also be on-hand to answer questions about Saturn cars, Saturn events, the Performance Concept cars, and of course, SPS modifications.

In addition to the unprecedented Saturn presence, the Carlisle event offers action-packed entertainment for any compact car enthusiast. Highlights for the 3-day event include a huge compact car show, a stereo competition, manufacturer and vendor displays, a swap meet, and an autocross competition.

Visit the Carlisle Show’s website at http://www.carsatcarlisle.com for more information or call them at 717-243-7855.

Product News
White Face Gauges are finally available for most DOHC Saturns! Well, almost available at least…Our new white gauges feature easy-to-read black numbers against a white background. And they include a red sock to cover the front light in the gauge panel that emits a sexy red glow at night. We are testing one set now and plan to have more sets available by the end of May. Available soon for all 93-99 DOHC for just $149.00 per set.

Stainless steel brake lines improve pedal feel and initial bite by reducing outward expansion and flex in the fenderwell lines. Our new sets are currently being tested, but are expected to be available by the end of May. Notable features include DOT approval and a user-friendly exterior teflon coating. Available soon for all Saturns. Pricing is yet to be announced.

Thanks to customer feedback, SPS has redesigned the Kayne muffler straps for better form and function! Our new straps maintain the same lower adjustable holder, but enjoy a redesigned 3-way adjustable upper bracket for attachment to the Saturn’s stock undercarriage mount. The new brackets employ a shorter vertical rise and OEM-like slits on the rear side for proper compatibility with the stock cross member. The price of the improved strap remains only $29.00.

Many more new products will be introduced very shortly. But although we are excited about the new items, we are trying very hard to use discretion about releasing new product information because sharing any information before solidifying all of the facts can inadvertently mislead customers, employees, and supporters. Please visit our web site often and watch for future updates. Many more exciting items are on the horizon!

Performance Concept Car Update
Assembly of the second Performance Concept SC2 has been completed by Saturn Corp. and the car was recently transported to its first official venue. All reports state that the newest Concept creation is just as stunning as the first. One or both of the Performance Concept SC2s will be on hand at the Custom Compact Power Jam at the Carlisle, PA fairgrounds on May 14-16.

SPS Racing
Thundersport Racing’s Mike Kramer won again on May 1-2 at the Daytona International Speedway winning yet another national points event and setting a new SSC course record!

Racing in a huge field of cars that included E Prod, F Prod, H Prod, GT4, GT5, SSB, and SSC, Mike and the Thundersport team qualified first in SSC and 22nd overall. Mike was pleased, but cautious – since the Daytona course is difficult and legendary.

Daytona’s 3.56-mile roadcourse oval - which is the same site as the legendary Rolex 24-Hour Endurance race - includes roughly 70% speedway oval and 30% infield roadcourse. According to Mike, "To go fast at Daytona, you’ve got to be able to go fast on the oval, but handle well on the roadcourse!"

During Sunday’s race, he did just that! Sunday brought great racing conditions that included cool and dry weather and a cool and clean track surface. And these things contributed to lots of fast racing. After seeing the green flag at the start, Mike was soon confronted with a wreck at the first turn on the first lap. He escaped unscathed and proceeded to tuck in behind Ken Payson’s SSB Mazda Miata. Together, Mike and Ken ran away from their respective competitors . Mike finished the race as the SSC champion and 17th overall. His best lap time of 2:28.175 with an 86 mph average speed shattered the old record of 2:32 by four seconds. And it firmly planted Saturn’s place in the record books!

Mike, his crew of John and Tom, supporters from Saturn of Gainesville, and Saturn enthusiasts everywhere should be proud to know that Saturn now holds a place of victory and honor among the legends at Daytona!

Mike’s next race is scheduled for June 12-13 at Road Atlanta.

Team scR newcomer Mark Rushbrook also turned heads at his first "official" competition at Grattan Raceway on May 1-2. The Grattan event was a double regional race and served as Mark’s first real race since earning his novice permit earlier in the season. Driving the SPS-owned #34 white 97 SC2, Mark took SSC victories in both Saturday’s and Sunday’s events.

Then, proving that the Grattan race was not a fluke, Mark repeated double SSC victories at the IRP double regional on May 8-9. Saturday’s exciting race found Mark starting in 5th place on the grid, 2nd in SSC out of 7 cars. But in a remarkable first-lap display of driving skills, Mark sliced right between two cars ahead of him that had collided and proceeded to charge to the front where he finished 1st in SSC and 3rd overall.

On Sunday, Mark qualified 2nd overall and 1st in SSC. Taking advantage of his grid position during the race, Mark again took 1st in SSC out of 8 cars, finishing 3rd overall. With four 1st place finishes out of four starts, it looks like we have a star on our hands!

But no star is as famous right now as our own James Walker of scR motorsports! James may be better known as a Saturn engineer and racecar driver - but now he is also a famous author!

His first printed exposure appears in the May/June edition of Grassroots Motorsports magazine on page 61 in an article entitled, "Saturn: A Different Kind of Race Car." Check it out at the newsstands or see the Saturn - a different.

Progress is also being made on the construction of the new scR ITA racecar. Currently, the car is receiving its new rollcage while James and Mark are busy designing the specifics of the coil-over suspension. Updates about the car and the 1999 schedule will continue as the car’s build-up progresses. Please watch the 'SCHEDULE' page at the scR motorsports website (http://www.teamscr.com) for new 1999 target events.
