Greetings Saturn Enthusiasts!

Sorry for the delay this month! Please enjoy the latest February SPS Updates…

SPS and Saturn Corp. to Make Second Performance Show Car
The unpredicted success of the first-ever SPS Performance Concept SC2 show car has led to the creation of yet another performance concept car. The second concept car will be similar to the first creation and will allow Saturn to better meet the requests of many Saturn retailers and Saturn enthusiasts throughout the U.S. that have asked to have the Performance Concept SC2 at their regional shows.

The success of the first Performance Concept Car at the Los Angeles and Chicago shows created a stir among Saturn retailers. Many of these retailers wished to have the Performance Concept SC2 at their own regional auto shows. However, since many shows throughout the U.S. take place at the same time, it was obviously impossible to meet every request with just one car. The creation of the second car will enable Saturn Corporation to add value to a greater number of auto shows and reach an even larger audience of Saturn enthusiasts.

Like the first car, the second Performance Concept car will include bolt-on items from SPS including the chrome Powerstack, big-bore throttle body, extrude-honed intake and exhaust manifolds, Magnecor 8.5mm ignition cables, and Kayne T304 2.0 inch mandrel-bent cat-back exhaust system with the Ralleye muffler. Suspension upgrades will include the Carrera struts, H&R springs, 16.5mm adjustable rear sway bar, SPS strut tower brace, and Stillen cross-drilled brake rotors. Like the first car, the second car will enjoy 17-inch Enkei wheels and Firestone performance tires. The paint scheme will again be a unique red creation, although it will vary from the Hot-Rod Red of the first car.

The final show schedule for both cars has not yet been determined. However, likely locations include Dallas, Atlanta, and New York. More info on the appearance schedules of these cars will be posted to the SPS site as it becomes available along with photos from the SPS trip to Chicago.

Product News – Many New Products Now in Stock!
For true high-performance applications, a brake rotor should have as much mass as possible – since the mass of the rotor determines a rotor’s ability to store heat. Powerslot performance brake rotors maintain more mass than a drilled rotor and feature 6 slots machined into each rotor surface to "clean" the face of the brake pad and prevent glazing under extreme conditions. Powerslot rotors are also coated with an attractive silver coating to resist corrosion and maintain an attractive finish over time. The rear rotors are part no. PSR8237 and are $89.00 each. The front rotors are part no. PSR8238 and are $99.00 each.

The Brand new PIAA Super White bulbs produce a very white light – similar to HID - without the "yellow" of a conventional halogen bulb. PIAA claims that the 51-watt 9006 performs like a 100-watt bulb and the 60-watt 9005 performs like a 110-watt bulb. Much brighter than the blue filtered bulbs, the PIAA Super White bulbs deliver a true lighting upgrade! These are in stock now and on sale for the month of February. See PIA9005 and PIA9006.

Accel 8mm spark plug wires offer less than 150 ohms of resistance per foot to ensure that all of the ignition coil’s energy makes it to the plugs. Accel wires also come in three color choices – red, yellow, or blue – and are priced to be ensure a great value! Available now for all DOHC Saturns. Only $29.00 per set! See ACC8002 in yellow, ACC8004 in red, and ACC8006 in blue.

NGK V-Power resistor-type spark plugs are now standard equipment on all new Saturns. Their copper cores and v-notch electrodes reduce voltage requirements to produce quicker starts and more power. Available now for only $2.90 each. See part no. NGK5155.

K&N’s Filtercharger Injection Performance Kit replaces the stock Saturn airbox with an open K&N filter element that allows less restriction against incoming combustable air. Unique features of the K&N kit include CARB approval, a fitting for the stock air temperature sensor, a bracket to support the filter, and a plastic adapter that works with the stock Saturn intake plumbing. (For all DOHC Saturns and 95-99 SOHC Saturns.) These are available now under part no. KN57-3012 for $169.00.

Pacesetter’s painted tri-Y exhaust headers make a very inexpensive performance upgrade for any enthusiast on a tight budget. The Pacesetter’s mandrel-bent tri-Y design offers increased exhaust flow for more power and lots of midrange torque. But the painted black exterior and ball-joint construction reduce costs. For all 94-98 DOHC Saturns. Kit includes most necessary fasteners and gaskets. See part no. PS70-1270 for only $179.00 each.

Recent changes to the PKG001 21 HP Package include the addition of the SPSB002 Powerstack mounting bracket, the NOL005 Nology wire separators, and all of the necessary replacement gaskets. You will notice a slight price adjustment to correspond with these additions.

Many more new products will be introduced very shortly. But although we are excited about the new items, we are trying very hard to use discretion about releasing new product information because sharing any information before solidifying all of the facts can inadvertently mislead customers, employees, and supporters. Please visit our web site often and watch for future updates. Many more exciting items are on the horizon!

Frequently asked question: "Why is the Pacesetter header so cheap?"

There are two main features of the Pacesetter header that keeps its cost so low. These include its painted black exterior finish and its ball-joint flex mechanism.

Some headers, such as the Hotshot/SPS unit, employ a thermal metallic coating to resist corrosion and contain exhaust temperatures. Rather than a thermal metallic coating, the Pacesetter uses a black paint that does not contain heat and does little to prevent corrosion.

Some headers, such as the Hotshot/SPS unit, also employ a stainless steel flex tube to allow for motor movement relative to the chassis. Rather than a flex tube, the Pacesetter uses a simple ball joint which may not provide a reliable seal against exhaust leaks.

SPS Racing
The SPS Racing Showroom Stock teams from scR motorsports and Thundersport Racing have had a frustrating and disappointing month. Despite being promised in the fall that the proposed 1999 performance package would be guaranteed a position on the competition board’s agenda for approval, the SCCA has since changed their minds and denied the opportunity to even present our package for a vote.

The season is about to begin for Mike Kramer and the Thundersport Racing team, so the delay in the package vote is particularly disappointing. But Mike remains optimistic, saying "The aggressive packages that have been approved for other cars in SSC (Showroom Stock C) will make it difficult for us to stay competitive this season. But what can we do? We can’t give up. We’ll just have to do the best that we can with the resources that we’ve been given. And I plan to drive hard and have fun in the process."

James Walker from scR motorsports presents a similar outlook. But he adds, "The instability of the rules in showroom stock makes it difficult for an independent racer to play the ‘game.’ A class that is less biased toward factory-sponsored efforts may ultimately prove to better serve the goals of scR motorsports."

Mike’s first race of the season is scheduled for March 13-14 at Roebling Road Raceway. We will report on the results of his race and the status of the 1999 package in the March update.
