Greetings Saturn Enthusiasts!

Please enjoy the latest August SPS Updates…

Performance Pilgrimage Wrap-up
The 1999 Performance Pilgrimage to Spring Hill, Tennessee took place from July 30 through August 1 in conjunction with the official Saturn Homecoming. Over 50 modified Saturns made the trip to share their efforts with thousands of other Saturn enthusiasts and team members. And the entire event was great fun – except for the VERY, VERY HOT weather (and some food-poisoning that struck SPS founder, John Comeskey.)

Highlights of the three-day event included concert performances by Hootie and the Blowfish, Faith Hill, and Tim McGraw, extended plant tours, test drives of the new 2000 models, Q&A opportunities with many Saturn engineers, and, of course, an awesome display of unique modified Saturns from throughout the U.S. and Canada. Many participants also enjoyed the solo2 autocross on Sunday – thanks to the Tennessee Region SCCA.

SPS thanks those who attended the 1999 Pilgrimage and those who helped make the event a success.

And we extend special congratulations to the 1999 car-show winners:

Best Wagon – Dennis Short, Dumfries, VA, 95 SW2

Best Coupe – Kurt Bennett, League City, TX, 95 SC2

Best Sedan – Kiel Sawusch, Chicago, IL, 91 SL2

Best of Show – Dennis Short, 95 SW2

And congratulations to the race winners:

Stock w/street tires – Aaron Plunkett, Cincinnati, OH, 96 SC2

Stock w/race tires – Lucas Grote, Greenville, SC, 92 SL

Modified w/street tires – Eric Penn, Detroit, MI, 96 SC2

Modified w/race tires – Kevin Svarda, Franklin, OH, 98 SC2

Photos from the 1999 Performance Pilgrimage will be added soon to the SPS website.

Product News
K&N and SPS are now proud to offer a drop-in replacement air filter for all 91-94 SOHC Saturns. This filter is very similar to the stock element and fits perfectly into the factory air box. However, instead of a restrictive paper element, the K&N unit uses a free flowing cotton element that greatly improves the breathing of the Saturn engine and never needs replaced (simply clean it when needed). The KN0006 filters for 91-94 SOHC Saturns are available now for $47.00 each.

The "Extreme Series" springs from Sprint offer just what the name implies: an extreme drop for the extreme enthusiast. Sprint’s radical 2.5-inch drop creates a slammed look and offers the lowest drop available from any conventional spring set. Sprint "Extreme Series" 2.5-inch lowering springs are in stock now for only $199.00/set. Use part number SPRX8500.

Many more new products will be introduced very shortly. But although we are excited about the new items, we are trying very hard to use discretion about releasing new product information because sharing any information before solidifying all of the facts can inadvertently mislead customers, employees, and supporters. Please visit our web site often and watch for future updates. Many more exciting items are on the horizon!

SPS Racing
Now that the Thundersport Racing team of Michael Kramer, Tom Brandlehner, and John Brandlehner have earned their second SCCA Southeast Division Championship title, they are resting and preparing for the National Championships at MidOhio in October. Mike and his team were at the Homecoming celebration in Spring Hill and were optimistic about their chances at MidOhio.

"Anything can happen at the Runoffs," said driver Mike Kramer. "Whether or not we win, we’re gonna put forth our best effort. And we’re gonna have fun."

Crew Chief Tom Brandlehner added, "We’ve already beat many of the best – including last year’s runner-up Ken Payson. Granted, the Civic Si’s are very fast. But we have a fast car and a great driver. I think that we can win it!"

The Thundersport team will get its chance at the Valvoline Runoffs at the MidOhio Sports Car Course during the week of October 8-10.

Showroom stock regional-racing sensation, Mark Rushbrook, also has taken a few weeks off to rest – since his SPS-owned racecar was used for recent Saturn events in Spring Hill, Tennessee and Cincinnati, Ohio. Mark will be competing in only his second national event at Grattan this weekend.

Preparation of the new scR ITA racecar is closer than ever to being finished. After months of agonizing preparation, James Walker is anxious to finally begin his season and work hard en-route to the American Road Race of Champions in Atlanta in November. The new race-prepped motor was finally installed last weekend and James has set his sights on an August 26-29 debut at Gingerman in South Haven, Michigan. Updates on the car and the 1999 schedule will continue as the car’s build-up progresses. Please watch the 'SCHEDULE' page at the scR motorsports website (http://www.teamscr.com) for new 1999 target events.

SPS Helps Create Excitement at Retailer-Sponsored Events
SPS has been creating excitement among Saturn owners since 1996. But recently, several Saturn retail facilities have caught-on to the SPS recipe.

At the annual Saturn Owner Appreciation Day at Kings Island Amusement Park in Cincinnati, Ohio, SPS helped entertain the crowds during lunch by displaying one of the Performance Concept Cars from Saturn, the pearl-white SPS project car, and the scR motorsports SSC racecar. Huge crowds seemed surprised – and relieved – that their beloved Saturn was a candidate for performance upgrades. And hundreds of guests seemed anxious to "buy" the Hot-Rod Red Concept car, as they literally lined-up to ask about pricing and availability.

SPS will be appearing again with Saturn’s Performance Concept SC2 at the Columbus Zoo on September 12.
