SPS and the Performance Concept SC2 at the Chicago International Auto Show, February 12-21, 1999
 | | Pictures cannot do justice to the awesome Hot-Rod Red paint scheme of the Performance Concept SC2. If you think it looks 'good' in the picture, you’d be floored by the real thing! The Holographic Mica has a very deep metallic flake that changes with the lighting conditions. |
 | | The Performance Concept drew big crowds at Chicago (and L.A. and Columbus and…) No surprise – it looks great from every angle! Notice the CATZ XLO Chrome Hyperwhite driving lamps. |
 | | A view underhood reveals the chrome Powerstack air cleaner, red Magnecor ignition cables, and a prototype SPS strut tower brace. Other less-obvious modifications include the SPS 52mm throttle body, extrude-honed intake manifold, and extrude-honed exhaust manifold. |
 | | The third door on the driver’s side is now standard on all Saturn coupes. This makes it a lot easier to carry your helmet and torque-wrench to the track! |
 | | A view of the inside reveals a custom red and black leather interior, the SPS short shifter, and white gauges (from the limited-edition black-top SC2s.) |
 | | The Performance Concept enjoys a lower stance and better handling thanks in part to H&R springs, Carrera struts, and the adjustable 16.5mm rear sway bar. |
 | | 17x7 Enkei Shogun wheels wrapped in Firestone SZ50 215/45/17 tires look great! Braking duties are handled by Stillen front and rear rotors, Carbotech HPS pads, and rear disc brakes from the SPS package. |
 | | 'The Three Amigos' from SPS (from left to right) John, Kevin, and Roger were in Chicago to answer questions about the car on February 13-14. |
 | | Who let this guy take the microphone?! Are there no behavioral standards in Chicago? Here SPS founder and CEO John Comeskey addresses the crowd to talk about the Performance Concept project and features that can be found on every Saturn that make them great cars for enthusiasts. |
 | | Never had the chance to take you motor apart to learn more about it? Saturn does it for you with cut-away motors at the auto shows. |
 | | No, they don’t start. They’re just models… |
 | | The people at the Lambo Diablo wouldn’t let us climb in and play with the buttons. Go figure… |
 | | You know you’ve got a lot of money when you can afford to turn your Ferrari into a racecar! |
 | | The year 2000 SC2. Yeah, right…They wouldn’t let us play with this Lotus either! |
 | | Acura offers this lightweight 'Zanardi' edition of the NSX, named after CART champ Alex Zanardi. We’d like to see a 'James Walker' or 'Mike Kramer' edition of the SC2! |
 | | We know that we’re not supposed to like Hondas…But 200 HP, rear-wheel-drive, 2 seats, convertible? That’s too cool! Its called the S2000 – and its coming soon! |
 | | They say that 'you can’t polish a turd.' Maybe not, but this performance concept Neon still looked pretty cool from a distance. |
 | | This is no Ford Escort, it’s a Cosworth Focus. Rear multi-link suspension, powerful twin cam motor, light curb weight - and it looks fast! Note the HUGE brake rotors! |
 | | Huge drilled and slotted Brembo rotors from the performance concept Pontiac Grand Am. |
 | | This modified Toyota Solara tried so hard not to be a 'chick car.' |
 | | Our first entry in the 'cars they’ll never build' category is this Dodge Charger. It looked pretty cool for a 'big' car. |
 | | The Cadillac Evoq has real potential. Can you say, 'Prowler', only faster? |
 | | Toyota’s entry for a hot compact concept was this sporty XYR. We wish we knew more details, but we don’t. Sorry! |
 | | This truck is actually badged as a Lincoln. Unique features include a billet aluminum bedliner and split, side-opening rear cargo doors. |
 | | Are people still buying sport utility vehicles? What good is a truck if it can’t pull your racecar to and from the track? |
 | | This slammed GMC was found right behind the Saturn display. Note silly SPS team member in the background. |
The SPS Performance Concept SC2 will appear again at the Saturn Homecoming in Spring Hill, TN on July 30-31. |
