Installation Instructions

1. Remove the shift knob by pulling straight upward very firmly. (Kneel on the seat, grasp the knob with both hands, and yank straight upward with a firm quick motion. Do not hit yourself in the face when the knob comes off!)

2. Remove the center console. To do this, remove the kick panels at each side of the front of the center console (one of these panels also serves as a fuse center cover) and the console/armrest (if installed). Remove the screws (one on each side) at the front of the center console and the two screws at the rear.

3. On 1991 - 1994 models, you should remove the ashtray. On later models, you will need to remove the cupholders and disconnect the wiring to the light. You may also need to disconnect wiring to the cigarette lighter.

4. Carefully lift the center console out of its location. If the vehicle is equipped with power windows, you can first disconnect the switch panel from the rest of the console.

5. Remove the leather shift boot. Be very careful not to break the tabs that secure the boot onto the shifter assembly.

6. Remove the shift cables from the shift assembly by prying the cable attachment away from the shifter attachment point. Be extra careful when removing the main cable that passes through the hole in the shifter base. As you apply pressure to remove the cable, you may wrap the cable around the edge of the hole in the shifter base. If you continue to apply pressure, then you will bend the cable around this edge! This will prevent the cable from traveling in and out of the sheathing, thus negatively affecting shifting action into 2nd, 4th, and reverse. Be sure to secure the base of the shifter lever to prevent the cable from wrapping around the edge of the pass through hole.

7. You may need to remove electrical wires that will be clipped to the side of the shift assembly base. Be careful removing these, as the clips can break rather easily. If you break a clip, simply tie the wires back in place on your new shift assembly.

8. Remove the bolt at the front of the shift assembly base (have bolt lube ready - these are notoriously difficult) and the other 4 bolts at the base of the shifter.

9. Lift out the original shift assembly.

10. Set your short shift assembly into place, reconnect the cable connections (by pressing the cables onto the shifter attachment points with pliers) and any electrical wire clips, and bolt the shift assembly down.

11. Before reinstalling the leather shift boot, break the plastic tabs out from the top of the boot. These tabs may interfere with shift motion and will prevent proper draping of the shift boot around the new shorter handle. Once done, reinstall the shift boot.

12. Reinstall the center console and accessories.
